Kashgar, the Xinjiang
capital
Kashgar is one oasis, about 1300m above the
sea level in a cul-de-sac formed by the Tian Shan, Pamir and Kunlun
ranges. Despite its isolation, Kashgar has seen plenty of traffic over the
last 2000 years, as a major Silk Road town and a crossroads for invading
armies.

Kashgaria's terrain, people, languages
and religion have more in common with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and
Tajikistan, and even nothern Pakistan, than with China. But over
the centuries Imperial China has come again and again to control
its frontiers or police the Silk Road. History in the Tarim Basin
is mainly conflicts between the Chinese and the indigenous nomadic
tribes. Recently, the Chinese government's response to riots and
bombing has been ferocious, with exile Uyghur sources claiming
hundreds or thousands of executions since 1996.
Xinjiang is home to over a dozen of China's 55
official minorities, and many ethnic groups are represented in
Kashgaria. A walk in Kashgar's bazaar reveals an array of faces
from Chinese, Slavic and Turkish to downright Mediterranean -
surmounted, incidentally, by an incredible variety of hats. Most
of them are Sunni Muslims, though not as self-consciously devout
as those in Pakistan. Though Madarin Chinese is the official language,
Xinjiang's lingua franca is Uyghur, a Turkic dialect written in
both Arabic and Latinised scripts, the latter introduced for a
time in an unpopular attempt to reduce illiteracy.

The Abak Hoja Tomb
The Apak Hoja Tomb located 5 km north--east of Kashgar , it is an important
cultural unit protected by the Kashgar government. As a tomb of the descendants
of an Islamic missionary,it was built around 1640 .The legend has it that
72 persons in all of 5 generations of the same family were buried in the
tomb. The first generation buried here was Yusuf Hoja, After he died,
his eldest son Apak Hoja carried on the missionary work and became the
leader of the famous Islamic sect of white mountaineer during the seventeenth
century which seized the power of the Yarkant for a time. Apak Hoja died
in 1693 and was buried in the tomb. His reputation was greater than his
father's, so the tomb was renamed "The Apak Hoja Tomb." The
legend goes that among the Hoja descendans buried here, one of lady who
was one of the concubines of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong. She was
called Xiangfei in Chinese name ( fragrant Imperial Concubine) because
of the rich delicate fragrance of flower sent forth by her body. After
she died, her remains was escorted back to Kashgar and was buried in the
Apak Hoja Tomb. So, the Chinese people call the tomb--- Xiangfei Tomb
,But according to textual research, Xiangfei was not other than Rongfei,
a concubine of Emperor Qian-long, and she was actually buried in the East
