| trees--have been found |
| in the areaof Karamali |
| Mountains,north of the |
| Jinggat Bason, and in |
| Wucaiwan(Muti-colored Bay) |
| of Jimsar County.According |
| to prelimenary investiga- |
| tion made in the General Gobi,north of the Qitai County,more
than |
| one thousand petrified trees were found on an area of about
two |
| thousand Mu. Amomg these petrified trees the tallest one was
30 |
| meters with a diameterof 2 meters at the widest point. Some
|
| petrified trees still remain in such good condition that their |
| trunks,bark,branches,and roots can easily be distingushed,as
if |
| they were still growing. Futhermore,people now can clearly
see |
| the growth ringsand its grain from the intersection of these
|
| petrified trees. There are also petrified fruit trees laden
with |
| fruit,with some fallen to the ground when they were ripe.It
was |
| noe hard to imagine that 100,000,000 tears ago the climate
of |
| the Junggar area was undoubtedly warm and wet. There were
verdant |
| subtropical forests where many kinds of trees sich as the
evergreen |
| coniferous and broadleaf trees, the golden larch,hald cypress |
| Chinese Larch and ginkgo grew luxuriantly |
